Professional Societies
The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons
The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons provides education and practice management services for orthopaedic surgeons and allied health professionals. The Academy also serves as an advocate for improved patient care and informs the public about the science of orthopaedics. Founded at Northwestern University as a not-for-profit organization in 1933, the Academy has grown from a small organization serving less than 500 members to the world's largest medical association of musculoskeletal specialists. The Academy now serves about 24,000 members internationally.
AO North America
AO North America is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the advancement of patient care, in orthopaedic, craniomaxillofacial, spine and veterinary surgery. The Organization's mission is to improve the care of patients with musculo-skeletal injuries and their sequelae in North America, through education and research in the principles, practice and results of treatment.
Clinical Orthopaedic Society
The purpose of the continuing medical education activity is the creation of an interest and further study of clinical orthopaedic care. The scope of our continuing medical education activity includes an annual meeting at which scientific papers are presented by members and invited authorities.
The Internet Society of Orthopaedic Surgery and Trauma

To provide an appropriate educational setting that will maintain the highest level of professional standards in order to promote continuous advancement in professional knowledge and improved treatment of disorders of the knee.To create an optimum environment to enhance education, research and treatment of arthritis of the knee joint.To promote and maintain professional standards to provide the best care to patients with arthritic disorders of the knee joint.
American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society
Founded in 1969, the AOFAS provides members and other orthopaedic surgeons with excellent educational opportunities designed to assist them in providing the highest quality foot and ankle care to the American public.AOFAS members are orthopaedic surgeons with a special interest in the foot and ankle. Members of the Society have completed medical school, and up to five years of orthopaedic residency including training in surgical and medical treatment of disease of the foot and ankle. Active AOFAS members also hold membership in the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and are certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons. Active members also may be Doctors of Osteopathy who have completed Part III of the American Osteopathic Board of Orthopaedic Surgery.
American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons
The mission of the AAHKS is to provide current educational, research and communication opportunities for the membership and their patients to allow continued quality management of arthritic disorders of the hip and knee.

The American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine
The American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM) is a national organization of orthopaedic surgeons specializing in sports medicine, including national and international sports medicine leaders. The AOSSM works closely with many other sports medicine specialists and clinicians, including family physicians, emergency physicians, pediatricians, athletic trainers and physical therapists, to improve the identification, prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of sports injuries.
The American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons
Through educational programs and by encouraging research, the organization seeks to foster and advance the science and practice of shoulder and elbow care. The American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES) is a society made up of leading national and international Orthopaedic surgeons who specialize in surgery of the shoulder and elbow. Through continuing medical education, the ASES Annual Meetings serve as a forum where persons involved in this field of medicine can meet, discuss new ideas and present scientific material. The membership, which is by invitation only, currently consists of 206 members. The ASES typically holds two meetings annually: The Open Meeting and Closed Meeting. The Open Meeting is held during the AAOS Annual Meeting, on Specialty Day. The Open Meeting is open to members and non-members while the Closed Meeting is for members only.
American Society for Surgery of the Hand
The mission of ASSH is to advance the science and practice of hand surgery through education, research and advocacy on behalf of patients and practitioners.
Association of Bone and Joint Surgeons
The Association of Bone and Joint Surgeons was conceived in 1947 by a group of orthopaedic surgeons composed of Earl D. Mc Bride, Louis Breck, Louis Greene, Frank Hand, Duncan McKeever, and Garett Pipkin, joined by Edward T. Evans, Harry Fortin, Fritz Teal, Vernon Thompson and Theodore H. Vinke as the "American Bone and Joint Association". Because of the rapid growth in the field of orthopaedic surgery at that time, as well as limited programs and meetings offered by the existing orthopaedic groups and only one exclusive orthopaedic publication, they decided that another organization should be created. The purpose of the Association was to give younger men in orthopaedic surgery another organization in which to present papers, publish manuscripts and share experiences with colleagues.
Cervical Spine Research Society
The Cervical Spine Research Society is a multidisciplinary organization that provides a forum for the exchange of ideas and promotes clinical and basic science research of the cervical spine. The organization values collegial interaction and strong scientific principles.
The Hip Society
THE GOAL AND MISSION OF THE HIP SOCIETY SHALL BE: To advance knowledge of the hip joint in health and in distress.To provide a forum to stimulate the exchange of knowledge concerning education, research, and treatment of disorders of the hip.The Hip Society has an open meeting that has wide geographic distribution. It is open to orthopaedic surgeons and engineers who have an interest in hip surgery. The ratio is 96% orthopaedic surgeons who attend the meeting. There are orthopaedists from many countries who attend the annual meeting.
The International Center for Orthopaedic Education
The International Center for Orthopaedic Education is a free program that promotes exchange in postgraduate orthopaedic education. The ICOE’s mission is to provide better patient care by coordinating educational, teaching and service experiences between countries around the world.
The J. Robert Gladden Orthopaedic Society
The J. Robert Gladden Orthopaedic Society seeks to increase the practice of orthopaedic surgery by under-represented minority surgeons. The J. Robert Gladden Orthopaedic Society's purpose includes promoting orthopaedic-related studies of minority populations to improve patient care through its scientific, educational, and charitable activities.
Musculoskeletal Tumor Society
The mission of the Musculoskeletal Tumor Society is to advance the science of orthopaedic oncology and to promote high standards of patient care. It does this through excellence in education and research and through advocacy on behalf of patients and orthopaedic oncologists.

The Orthopaedic Research Society (ORS) is an organization dedicated to advancement of orthopaedic research. The Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America (POSNA) has as its mission the development and implementation of the highest quality education of pediatric orthopaedists thereby assuring the best possible care of musculoskeletal pediatric patients. POSNA will endeavor to become the focal point and authoritative source on such care through appropriate alliances with other related organizations and through research that will lead to evidence based patient care.
THE RUTH JACKSON ORTHOPAEDIC SOCIETY
THE RUTH JACKSON ORTHOPAEDIC SOCIETY (RJOS) was founded in 1983 as a support and networking group for the growing number of women orthopaedic surgeons. The women at the first meeting felt that there were many common problems confronting them which could best be solved by pooling resources. These range from sharing technical solutions for practice problems to how to survive motherhood and orthopaedic practice/residency at the same time.
The Scoliosis Research Society
The Scoliosis Research Society is a professional organization, made up of physicians and allied health personnel. Our primary focus is on providing continuing medical education for health care professionals and on funding/supporting research in spinal deformities. Founded in 1966, the SRS has gained recognition as one of the world's premier spine societies. Strict membership criteria ensure that the individual Fellows support that commitment. Current membership includes 751 of the world's leading spine surgeons as well as some researchers, physician assistants and orthotists who are involved in research and treatment of spinal deformities.
The Society of Military Orthopaedic Surgeons
The Mission of the Society is to provide a forum for the interchange of medical knowledge as it relates to the practice of orthopaedic surgery in the military.
American Osteopathic Academy Of Orthopedics
"The American Osteopathic Academy of Orthopedics was formed in 1941. As of September, 2004, the American Osteopathic Academy of Orthopedics (AOAO) has a total of 992 members: which number includes Active Members, plus Life, Military, Retired, Honorary and Associate Members. The AOAO has 29 approved Osteopathic Orthopedic Residency Programs with 315 approved residency slots and graduates in excess of 50 Osteopathic Orthopedic Surgeons per year.

In order to promote the highest quality orthopedic service, the AOAO has long provided outstanding instructional courses, now on a semi-annually basis. The Academy first promotes and advances the specialty of Osteopathic Orthopedic Surgery among its members. We then promote Osteopathic Orthopedic Surgery throughout the osteopathic profession, disseminating the latest medical information in our specialty. These efforts are aimed at increasing the knowledge of all other osteopathic physicians, thus enhancing their ability to manage patients in the field of orthopedics."

The International Research Society of Spinal Deformities
The International Research Society of Spinal Deformities (IRSSD) was established in 1994 to advance the study and research into Spinal Deformities for the public benefit. The object of the Society is to provide a forum for the presentation and encouragement of research relating to spinal deformity and to disseminate the results of such research.
American Academy of Neurological & Orthopaedic Surgeons
The American Academy of Neurological and Orthopaedic Surgeons is a scientific and educational association of orthopedists and neurosurgeons that was founded in the year of 1974 to improve the quality of care and directions for patients in these two major fields of orthopaedics and neurosurgery by setting high standards for training, credentialing and surgical education and for the practice of orthopaedics and neurosurgery by teaching, through the Journal of the American Academy of Neurological and Orthopaedic Surgery. Also, through annual meetings and other meetings during the year and many workshops. Members have the privilege of writing articles in the Journal, exchange of ideas among the surgeons and directions for open, unbiased, non-discriminating, uncensored ideas in the medical and surgical field.
Osteogenesis Imperfecta Foundation
The Osteogenesis Imperfecta Foundation, Inc. (OI Foundation) is the only voluntary national health organization dedicated to helping people cope with the problems associated with osteogenesis imperfecta. The Foundation's mission is to improve the quality of life for people affected by OI through research to find treatments and a cure, education, awareness, and mutual support. The OI Foundation began in 1970 when a small group of parents from around the nation met in Chicago to discuss OI and its problems. At that time, they banded together to stimulate public and professional interest, support families and encourage research. Today, many of the people who serve on the board of directors and oversee the Foundation's operation have OI themselves or are parents of children with OI.
National Association of Orthopaedic Technologists
The National Association of Orthopaedic Technologists (NAOT) was founded on August 29, 1982, in Boston, Massachusetts. NAOT was originally conceived in the minds and hearts of a few members of the National Federation of Orthopaedic Technologists many years prior to 1982. The group recognized that strength is fostered in unity, and professionalism is rooted in the formulation of goals and standards. A core group of orthopaedic technologists committed themselves to the formulation of an independent, self-governing organization. They presented their concepts to the full membership of the Federation in Dallas, Texas in 1981. A vote was taken, and the decision was made to prepare to launch the new association at the 1982 convention. Representatives from the various regional, state, and local groups (members of the Federation) came together in Boston to adopt a charter and by-laws for a truly national organization. Officers were elected, and the Executive Board was established. NAOT was born, and the parent Federation became a thing of the past.

NAOT is dedicated to the pursuit of excellence through education of orthopaedic technologists, and other related allied health care professionals, and the general public. NAOT believes that the profession of orthopaedic technology can only reach full potential and universal acceptance through widespread educational opportunities. Certification of all orthopaedic technologists underscores NAOT's commitment to these professional goals.

The American Society for Bone and Mineral Research
The American Society for Bone and Mineral Research (ASBMR) is a professional, scientific and medical society established to bring together clinical and experimental scientists involved in the study of bone and mineral metabolism. ASBMR encourages and promotes the study of this expanding field through annual scientific meetings, an official journal (Journal of Bone and Mineral Research), the Primer on the Metabolic Bone Diseases and Disorders of Mineral Metabolism, advocacy and interaction with government agencies and related societies.
